Synopsis

Ben Burns (Lucas Hedges), 19, unexpectedly returns to his family’s suburban home on Christmas Eve. Ben’s mother, Holly (Julia Roberts), is thrilled to welcome him home. His teenage sister, Ivy (Kathryn Newton) and stepfather Neal (Courtney B. Vance), are wary.

Although Ben claims he's clean now, Holly is worried that Ben is still using drugs and keeps a watchful eye on her son, to the point of hiding her prescription drugs and asking Ben to leave the bathroom door open. Over a turbulent 24 hours, new truths are revealed, and a mother’s undying love for her son is tested as she does everything in her power to keep him safe.

  • 4 stars "Strong performance by Julia Roberts--not a lot of fun to be had being the mother of a drug addict. It's a powerful tale, both dramatic and emotional. I wasn't fully buying into Lucas Hedges as the addicted son. It wasn't totally his fault, as some of the dialogue didn't ring true. Still worth seeing. WARNING--NOT a fun movie...……...…Guru Bob……………………………..84/100"
  • 5 stars "Refreshingly understated. Avoids stereotypes. This film grabs your attention due to the terrific acting by Roberts and Hedges and its script. Well worth watching!"
  • 1 star "It's such an obvious ploy to demonize institutions and make it look evil to even mention being gay is anything but positive. Yeah, being gay has been around since the beginning of time, we all know that. But it's still frowned on and that's the way it is being people are not comfortable with the idea. One of the reasons is very deep, it's that you can't make babies without the 2 sexes procreating. It's hard wired to procreate but the leftists don't like that!!!"
