Synopsis

FREE SOLO is an edge-of-your seat thriller and an inspiring portrait of Alex Honnold, an athlete who challenges both his body and his beliefs on a quest to triumph over the impossible, revealing the personal toll of excellence.

As the climber begins his training, the armor of invincibility he's built up over decades unexpectedly breaks apart when Honnold begins to fall in love, threatening his focus and giving way to injury and setbacks. Directors Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi succeed in beautifully capturing deeply human moments with Honnold as well as the death-defying climb with exquisite artistry and masterful, vertigo-inducing camerawork.

  • 5 stars "I liken Alec Honnold to Leonardo da Vinci, a genius who kept meticulous notebooks of his inventions. Similarly, Honnold prepared for his climb by writing voluminously about each crack and crevice on the face of the monumental rock slab. He is quirky, probably on the autism spectrum, but that only adds to his appeal. Get yourself to this movie while you can still see it on a large screen. Alec is brilliant, and his feat far outshines any individual Olympic achievement."
  • 5 stars "Intense, very personal, you feel like you are there. A very unique view of an incredible person's physical and mental battles."
  • 4 stars "WOW very well done.. Cinematography was dead on makes you feel right there every step his climb. See this doc if you can not to miss"
