Lucie, called Lulu, is turned down flat and insulted when she goes for a job interview in a small coastal town. When she misses her train home, the 40-something mother-of-three decides to enjoy an impromptu holiday away from her domineering husband. On the beach, Lulu meets Charles, an ex-con with a big heart, for whom she begins to develop feelings. But when she realizes her oldest daughter has come to find her, Lulu takes flight.
Landing in another town along the coast, she clumsily tries to snatch an elderly woman’s purse and winds up becoming her companion. The woman gives Lulu a mission—to find an old friend with whom she wants to be reconciled before she dies. Through her research, Lulu meets Virginia, a young waitress who is mistreated by her nasty boss.
