Yannis, 14, lives alone with his father Demosthenes, a gruff and taciturn fisherman, on a beautiful Greek island. One day, Yannis trades the gold cross he inherited from his late mother to a boat captain in exchange for a little bird lying in the hold. Unbeknownst to his father, the boy forms a strong bond with the pelican, whom he names Nicostratos. The bird causes a sensation among the islanders, especially at the local café run by Aristotle, where he is a tourist attraction, and where Yannis meets Angeliki, Aristotle's niece. Although things are looking up for the teenager, his relationship with his father worsens.
