In 1920s Paris, prosperous industrialist George Valandrey is happily married to Gilberte, a flirt who amuses herself with several other men, including a young artist named Charley. George doesn’t worry about it, because he believes that that the first man to touch a woman forever possesses her.
However, Gilberte has hidden from him that she was married before, to prudish American businessman Eric Thomson. Extraordinary circumstances lead to George inviting Eric to dine at their home to discuss a business deal, and Gilberte fears that her secret will be revealed and her reputation ruined.
