A young personal companion (Lily James) for an elderly lady on vacation in the south of France meets wealthy Maxim de Winter (Armie Hammer). He begins inviting her out and they discover they enjoy each other's company. When her boss decides to travel to the United States with the young woman, Maxim asks the girl to marry him.
After their honeymoon, they arrive at Maxim's imposing family estate, Manderley. The housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers (Kristin Scott Thomas), seems cold to the young newlywed and forbids her from entering a section of the home that she's kept just as Maxim's first wife, Rebecca, left it. The young woman begins to feel that Rebecca was superior in every way as she struggles to meet everyone's expectations.
