Two kung fu masters—Ip Man, the man who trained Bruce Lee, and Gong Er, who comes from the north, meet in Ip Man's hometown of Foshan on the eve of the Japanese invasion in 1936.

Gong Er's grandfather, a renowned grandmaster, is also traveling to Foshan for his retirement ceremony, which is to take place at the legendary brothel The Golden Pavilion.

This story of betrayal, honor and love plays out during the tumultuous Republican era that followed the fall of China's last dynasty, a time of chaos, division and war that was also the golden age of Chinese martial arts.

  • 4 stars "Very good movie, kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through. I could understand how important family honor is in China and how the Japanese invasion of China had changed the lives of the people we love the most. Good Good movie."
