The Midas Touch is an ambitious period film, which spans the period from the end of World War II to the Hungarian Uprising of 1956, and is largely set in Budapest's Teleki Square fleamarket. Sandor Monori is a black-market trader who uses his wiles to establish himself as the King of the Fleamarket.
His philosophy serves him well and he manages to manipulate the lives of those around him with money. Inevitably, though, money cannot buy everything, as Sandor learns when the Russians invade.
Beremenyi won Best Director at the 1989 European Film Awards for this potent morality tale, which fuses personal memory and geopolitical history into a powerful, engaging drama.
