It seems strange that a white woman would claim to be black, doesn't it? But after watching this documentary, you'll have new understanding and sympathy for Rachel Dolezal, who was the head of her local N.A.A.C.P. chapter but lost everything when people discovered she came from white parents.

However, as we learn, her parents were extremely militant and abusive, both emotionally and physically. They adopted several African American children and continued their abuse. Their adopted daughter shows the scars she still bears from the beatings. It was little wonder then that Rachel identified more with her adopted sister and brothers than with her white parents.

This is her story — kind-hearted Rachel took guardianship of one of her adopted brothers, finds support through her adopted sister, and struggles to raise her mixed-race son while fending off attacks from all sides and losing everything she'd worked hard to gain, including her status in the community. Finally, she decides to write a book about her life story.
