When she died I got the rocking chair which was at my mom & dad’s. Dad surprised me with it one Christmas in my new house – he had it completely done over but it was still the same wood. I have always been a creative person. When I was 4 or 5 my grandmother collected stamps from the grocery store, when she got enough stamps she traded them in on a play desk for me. My grandma asked me to get her something from the back room and when I walked in the room had balloons, Easter chocolate and an Easter bunny stuffed animal all waiting for me! Given the situation with COVID this year I won’t be able to be with my family for the holidays, as is probably the case for many people. Spending the holidays with family and loved ones is such a special thing.

The best and most unexpected gift was from my parents, I had bought an Opal while traveling through Australia when I was 19, I found a setting that i wanted, but was shocked at the price, only to discover that mom had the ring made and it is still one of my favourites!! She put it in my stocking as it was in a ring box and I had no idea she had even taken the stone, I must have given it to her for safe keeping though.

I borrowed a friend’s big sister’s skates which I had to stuff with socks because they were way too big, but my parents couldn’t afford skates so I made due. I did that for an entire winter. The following Christmas my big sister bought me a pair of skates; she had put a bit of money away each month so that she could buy them for me. I had no idea what was in the box because my sister actually put a picture of a pair of skates that she cut out of a catalogue so I had no idea. When I saw the picture I asked her if she was going to buy me a pair and then she handed me the box that had the actual skates. I squealed like a happy pig LOL!

When I was 7(1997)years old I received the Polly Pocket camper set and classroom set that came with a collection of stamps and two secret areas in the camper and classroom when the ink was hidden! Honestly no other toy has measured up since then. Nostalgia at its finest.

Best gift I have ever received was a hand painted ceramic Christmas tree from my best friend last year. My grandmother always had one that I loved, and when she died, we couldn’t find it. She likely lent it to the church for something and no one returned it after she had passed. I always wished I had one as it reminds me of her. My best friend painted this one for me at a local pottery shop and delivered it before the holidays last year. So, now it sits on my bookcase each holiday season and my grandmother is never far from my thoughts.

Waking up Christmas morning and seeing a wooden sled with red rope to hold onto. To this day nothing has come close to that feeling. There’s nothing like racing down a hill as a kid so proud on your sled.
My partner once did 12 days of Christmas for me where he did something thoughtful everyday for 12 days. It wasn’t material, it was simple things like making a mix tape for me for a long drive, recording himself singing funny Christmas songs. It was the best!

The best gift I ever got would have to be out of the Teddy Ruxpin talking bear and the Playstation 2. I will say the Playstation 2 though because I totally didn’t expect to get it and I was still recovering from surgery for Ulcerative Colitis so it was a difficult year and my Mom surprised me with the Playstation 2 and a wrestling game Legends Of Wrestling as I was a huge wrestling fan. I was so humbled and Thankful that my Mom went out of her way to that for me. I remember she said it was the last Playstation 2 and Zellers and she got it. I also remember being together along with Mom all of my pets my first cat Kitty and my first and only dog Buffy so it was a special moment and time. I Miss them Dearly and All my Pets. I will Always Cherish and Remember that Christmas and All of those Times!

As a child the best gift was Operation! (Amazing in a family of 5 kids to get what you asked for) and as an adult having our precious grandson spending the day with us.
The best gift I ever received was a remote control truck that transported cars. In those days it wasn’t really remote, the controller had a wire that ran to the truck. In the days and weeks that followed our parents must have spent a fortune on batteries as we played with it all the time.
A few years ago, my dad was taken to North York General hospital, a few days before Christmas with breathing difficulties. I stayed with him in the hospital during the Christmas break and the the doctors drained his lungs on Christmas day. We took him home the next day and he recovered. That was the best gift I have received for Christmas. Merry Christmas to you all.

The best gift I ever received? Wow, that is a really hard one, but I would say it’s not exactly a “Christmas Gift”, but was finally getting a diagnosis for my back pain that I had been dealing with for 8 years.
I got injured at work in 2010….and for 8 years, doctors and the health system and just “everything” was completely against me and believed I was actually “faking” what I was going through….which was pure “hell” in much respect.
It finally took the ONE doctor who believed I truly DID have something happening, but it was my ‘brain” causing the issues. And the “gift” I received was finally being diagnosed with a brain disorder that was the cause of all my pain and suffering for so many years.
And with his help and care and his team over 2 months…..I am living an amazing and happy life today…..as free of pain as can possibly be (yet still living with this “disorder” for life).
I have been given the “gift” of a 2nd chance at a new life…..and for that I have no words for how grateful I am. And I truly can’t think of a more better gift I have or will ever receive than this.

When I was young there was a string tied to the tree with a tag saying ‘follow me’ – it led me all through the house and out the back door where a beautiful bicycle was waiting. I served 35yrs in her majesty service and then went to work where I travelled to a site and was away for 2 to 3 weeks at a time. The way the shift went most times I worked Christmas, this time I had a chance to get home and the plane was delayed because of weather. However the weather cleared enough to land and we all made it home in time, one day to spare.

The best gift I ever received was having my mom home on a day-pass from the hospital for the holiday. She had stage 4 colon cancer and spent her last remaining months in the hospital so she could receive the care and pain medication she required to live out her last days. She fought this battle for so long and wanted to die at home. We kept her at home as long as we could with my 4 sisters and I taking turns staying with her to care for her but the pain was too much for her to handle. She was admitted at the beginning of December 2018. Everyone was at my sisters for the holiday so we asked if we could bring her home on a day pass. The hospital was very reluctant, but in the end they allowed her this one last request. She was weak and tired but fought it for the day and had so much fun. She tried to outlast us all. Needless to say, my mom passed away the evening of January 26, 2019. I miss her so much every and so do my 4 sisters. She has had a great impact on all of our lives and will be loved and missed by all of us forever.

When I went back to pay a couple of weeks later it was gone, I was devastated, its hard saving that much money when you’re 14.
Christmas morning imagine my huge smile… it was the last gift hidden, way in back, under the tree. I was so excited. Mom had gone back the day after we’d been out and bought it for me.
Mom is gone now, but I still have the ring and love it to this day, all the more so because of the special memories attached to it.

The best gift I ever got was a doll from my father when I was 5 years old. I had wanted a dark skinned baby doll very badly and my family was very poor so we only got 1 present at christmas and I didn’t expect I would get one. What made it the very best gift was that my father hand sewed clothes for the doll, pjs, a plaid skirt and top etc and it ended up being the last gift I every received from him as he passed away the following April. His efforts to make it special by all the work he did is a reflection of the man that he was and as I grew up without him, I have that memory as an example of what kind of person I wanted to be.
When I was 15 my parents took me on a trip to Orlando, Florida. The trip and Disney World wasn’t just the present they also surprised me with a trip to Discovery Cove and swimming with a dolphin.

This was “The Gift from the Heart” as he heard me always complaining about the one I had. To be honest this was the gift I was most excited about and I told him that….however when I stepped on the pedal to open the lid.. there inside was a pair of diamond earrings…. which was the next best gift. I still really really liked that garbage can and it too has lasted besides the memory.
My brother’s surprised me and my daughter with a trip to China with them. And when we got there they gave us money to spend as well. It was amazing to spend Christmas with my family who lived all around the world. We never been able to afford it ourselves. That was just the best Christmas ever.

In 1970, when I was 6, my parents got me a Strauss Audio Cassette Tape Recorder. My brother and I would ALWAYS awake them at 7am and my dad would ALWAYS say to put on the coffee and let us open one gift from under the tree. He said not to open this one specific gift, most likely thinking I would open the largest instead. BUT… I opened the one that made the most interesting sound when given a shake. In it was 12 wrapped single cassettes. Interesting to say the least because I had know idea what a cassette was!
It became my all-time favourite gift!

When I was a a kid, my sister and I received a giant box in the garage from “Santa”. It was a wooden play set with a tower, slide, monkey bars and swings. I have so many great memories from that amazing gift.
Best Christmas gift our family received was my sister in law getting better after she was septic and in hospital. My S.I.L was pregnant and had her appendix burst about 5 days before Christmas. She was about 5 months pregnant at the time. They did emergency surgery on her to remove the appendix and clean her up with out disturbing the baby. There was a worry that she would go into premature labour. She ended up septic and her organs were shutting down. Finally on Dec 24th afternoon she made a turnaround and things got better. You can’t imagine how happy and relieved we all were. It snowed that night as well. I’ll never forget it. It truly felt like a miracle.

When I was 14, I got to spend the holidays with my grandparents at their home in Africa. My grandfather was an ophthalmologist who was working at a clinic in Mombasa, providing much-needed medical care to Somalian refugees at camps along the Kenyan border. The experience changed me for the better. It was the first year I truly understood the concept of Santa and the beauty to be found in giving a gift to others in anonymity.
A trip to Kenya to spend Christmas with my grandparents when I was 14, as my grandfather was working as an ophthalmologist at the time in Somalian refugee camps. It really taught me a lot about the spirit of giving.
