The 67th Grammy Awards were held Sunday, with Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar being two of the big winners of the night.
The show, which aired on CBS, was once again hosted by comedian Trevor Noah, making it the fifth straight year with him as the emcee. In the wake of the Los Angeles wildfires, the telecast was made into a fire relief central show, which raised $7 million for relief efforts.
Members of the L.A. Fire Department were on hand to present the big prize of the night, album of the year. Beyoncé took home the Grammy for her album Cowboy Carter, ending her streak as the most nominated female artist without a win in the album of the year category. The win put her ahead of other nominees: André 3000, Sabrina Carpenter, Charli xcx, Jacob Collier, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, and Taylor Swift.
During her acceptance speech she thanked the bravery of all the firefighters in Los Angeles and acknowledged the long wait for her to win the award. “I just feel very full and very honored,” she began. “It’s been many, many years and I just want to thank the Grammys, every songwriter, every collaborator, every producer, all of the hard work.”
She also took home the award for best country album, making her the first Black woman to win the award. She is the most-awarded Grammy artist in history.
Kendrick Lamar swept up Sunday night as he took home five Grammys including a win for best song for “Not Like Us.” “At the end of the day, nothing’s more powerful than rap music. We are the culture,” Lamar said during his acceptance speech. “To the young artists, I just hope you respect the artform — it will get you where you need to go.”
The night wasn’t without its oddities and controversies, with none being bigger than the presence of Kanye West and Bianca Censori. Despite previous reports saying that the two were not invited to the ceremony and were escorted out, an update has been provided by a TMZ source that suggests West and Censori were invited guests and left under their own volition. West was nominated for best rap song — this was his first appearance at the Grammys since 2015.
Their presence was highlighted by the fashion statement from Censori as she walked down the red carpet wearing a completely see-through dress that left very little to the imagination.
On the awards side there were some notable nominees who left without a single award. Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift, who received seven and six nominations respectively, were shut out, while actor/writer/director Bradley Cooper won his third Grammy for his work on the soundtrack of the film Maestro.
