  212. Frances • December 10, 2014 @ 12:19 PM

It used to be an insane affair, as my husband is French Cdn, so we would go to one of his relative’s houses around 7pm and wish them Merry Christmas and exchange gifts and stay until midnight to toast Christmas. Then we’d all pile into the car and head over to another of his relative’s houses for the Fete de Reveillon (turkey and tortiere pie dinner served after midnight) and then exchange gifts with the hosts and toast Christmas some more. By about 4 or 4:30am we’d be heading home and would just about fall asleep when my parents would call at 7am and expected us to be there to open gifts with them.

Now that the kids are grown and most of those relatives have passed on, Christmas Eve is a rather quiet subdued affair around here now. Just the 2 of us and if our son feels like stopping in he will, if not, oh well, he’ll be around for Christmas dinner on Christmas Day.

  213. Jolene • December 10, 2014 @ 12:19 PM

Seeing as we don’t have that much family here in Canada, we normally spend it with our immediate family. We help each other cook dinner, and eat a massive meal (lol), once we’re stuffed we watch Christmas movies and laugh at my mum and dad when they get a bit tipsy lol. We used to open presents on Christmas Eve as that’s very common in Portugal, however, over the last few years we’ve begun doing that in the morning and adpating to this way lol.

Christmas Eve is a little different at our house. We started celebrating Christmas on Christmas Eve when I was a small child – it started the year after I woke my parents up at 4 am and declared that Santa had already arrived and we needed to have the tree immediately.

The tradition is now being celebrated with the third generation down and we have added a new twist. We gather at my home and have a waffle brunch. It means a lot of cooking and standing for me, but we love it and look forward to it every year now. Hot, fresh, home made waffles, followed by the tree, and then, later in the afternoon we have snacks and a light dinner.

Christmas Day is spent with all the inlaw’s families.
