Two sequels — Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Zombieland: Double Tap — debuted on Friday, making their way into the top five at the weekend box office. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil took the first spot, pushing last weekend’s box office champion, Joker, to second.
Opening in over 3,700 theatres across North America, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, starring Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning, is a follow-up to the 2014 hit film Maleficent. The sequel debuted to the tune of $36 million, giving Disney their seventh #1 opening film of the year.
The DC film Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix, which dropped just one spot to second place in its third weekend at the box office, earned an additional $29.2 million for a total of $247.2 million.
The highly anticipated sequel Zombieland: Double Tap, which brought back stars Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin, debuted in third place, earning $26.7 million during its first weekend, $2 million more than the $24.7 million the original film, Zombieland, earned when it debuted 10 years ago in October 2009.
Dropping two spots this weekend was the animated feature The Addams Family. It earned an additional $16.1 million for a two-week total of $56.8 million.
Rounding out the top five was Gemini Man starring Will Smith, which dropped two spots from last weekend. The unique film, shot at 120 fps, brought in an additional $8.5 million for a two-week total of $36.5 million. ~May Wong

When is Hollywood going to come up with something new?
Karey: Hollywood will come up with something new when today’s idiotic audiences stop paying to see all this junk food franchise cinema they’re shoving at us now (I won’t be holding my breath for this)
It seems every movie once it makes a smidge more than it’s budget, it’s time for a sequel. It seems, unless it’s a Christopher Nolan original movie (Obviously Batman was meant to be a trilogy), everyone gets a shot at a sequel.
