ABC Family picks up Jennifer Lopez’ comedy pilot

Former American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez has taken her TV talents elsewhere! Through her production company, Nuyorican, J-Lo’s comedy-drama The Fosters has been picked up by ABC Family for a pilot episode. The show takes on controversial topics, with a lesbian couple raising a multi-ethnic mixture of biological and foster children. With the Chick-Fil-A controversy bringing equality issues to the forefront, this could be the perfect time for the series, but it could also alienate a lot of audiences who aren’t able to relate. People instantly dismissing the show on this basis may want to consider that that is how many people feel when watching shows depicting the stereotypical family consisting of a mother, father and children who are all fully blood related. By giving this show the green light, ABC Family is providing a prime example of how media is beginning to evolve to meet the needs of the increasingly diverse society we all live in. Nuyorican is also responsible for the upcoming feature romantic comedy Taming Ben Taylor starring Kevin Costner. ~Morgan Bates

I think modern Family opened the doors to these new shows where they pit ‘odd’ pairings of people together and see if the possible shock value will add laugher to the show. So Modern Family you have a older man, with a younger hot woman who also has an x and they are foreign. you have the gay couple trying to raise a daughter and a ‘regular’ husband and wife still together with dysfunctional kids. Add the dynamic of the dad been estranged from his kids and now making amends.

So that template now starts more shows with off pairings. Soon it will be a martian marries a human, with a dog having relations with a cat while seeing a hamster on the side, and the homeless man down the street is secretly a millionare but even he doesn’t know it and he’s dying from a rare disease and the only cure has something to do with the martian and they always come close to figuring it out but they never do. In the mean time comedy and drama ensues.

It will have a hard time producing more yucks than Jennifer’s year on AMERICAN IDOL.
