Aerosmith almost replaced Steven Tyler due to American Idol

Though it’s hard to believe that Aerosmith would be the same without Steven Tyler, it didn’t stop some of the rock and roll band’s members from considering it. During a recent episode of VH1’s The Metal Show, Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford admitted that the band considered replacing the legendary lead singer because of his gig on American Idol. Whitford explained that Tyler’s new job came as such a huge surprise to the band members that they had to at least discuss the possibility of a new front man. “We had to talk about it because we’re just like ready to work all the time, so what are we going to do. So we said maybe we could put a different name on it and maybe bring somebody else in,” Whitford said.
However, Tyler’s busy schedule finally freed up when he announced in July that he would officially be leaving the show. Though Tyler’s involvement on Idol was a strange time for the band, Whitford stated that it was “a great thing for our band because people got to see a side of Steven that only we get to see” and introduced the group to new audiences. Whitford even admitted, “It’s impossible to fill Steven’s shoes.” ~Isabelle Khoo
