American Idol feud: Adam Lambert disses James Durbin

By Alexandra Heilbron on May 18, 2011 | 26 Comments

Earlier in the season, former American Idol contestant Adam Lambert praised James Durbin, whose range and singing style on this season’s show was compared to Lambert’s. However, Lambert recently changed his tune, coming right out and dissing the young singer. Before James was voted off the show last Thursday, Lambert told The Hollywood Reporter that he’s “kind of over” James. “I think he’s got talent and passion 100 percent, but I feel like he’s trying way too hard,” Adam said. “Also, his niche is so limited with the metal.” When asked by MTV News about Adam’s comments, James responded: “I was nothing (but) nice to that guy and you know, he decided to take it to a different level. Whatever.” Lambert’s new favorite is Haley Reinhart, but he says the judges don’t give her enough positive reinforcement. “I wish the judges gave her a little bit more praise because what she’s doing is technically superb… musically and vocally, she’s doing things that are at a top-notch level. It’s incredible how Haley makes it look so easy and effortless. Plus, she’s having fun up there. I don’t feel like she’s working so hard to prove herself or to prove a point. She’s just singing and taking joy in music.”

James was great, I thought he’d win the whole thing. But now that he’s off, I hope Haley wins and Scotty comes in second.

That is not dissing James…that is being honest about his ability and his effort on stage…He did try to hard…and screamed out of tune…Everyone is entitled to an opinion…Adam has been in the business for a long time…He knows the ropes…His advise is good for James…James’ problem is he does not listen and takes things personally…He will have a tough road if he keeps trying to find excuses for things…such as this and as being voted off…Please people…the best singers on the stage on Idol were…Pia, Jacob, Haley and Casey…James was ok…if you like hard rock where people scream…I personally like my singers to sing in tune…And James needs to watch out…You do not want to mess with the worldwide Glam Army….Go Haley

I guess Adam isn’t here for James’ entertainment? lol

  4. Debbie • May 18, 2011 @ 11:00 AM

James is only 22 & Adam was at his peak 28 years old when he was on Idol. james will only get better. besides who cares what Adam thinks I mean how bad do you have to be to be thrown out of a Lady Gaga party?

  5. Candy • May 18, 2011 @ 12:40 PM

I’m tired of the media calling it a ‘twitter war’. James took the high road and is the adult in the room. Who cares what Lambert thinks? I suppose he hasn’t been receiving enough attention lately.

I loved watching and listening to Adam Lambert when he was on American Idol and I thought that he should have won that season, because of his talent.

But if he made the comments about James Durbin, before James was voted off of American Idol. I can understand way James broke down during one of his performances. I knew something had to take place! If Adam Lambert made those comments about James Durbin, that was unprofessional of him.

I would like to be updated on news of James Durbin. I like listening to him very much and so did my family. We looked forward to hearing his performance on American Idol.

  7. Angela • May 19, 2011 @ 12:01 AM

I agree, that was unprofessional of him to do that. He knocked Susan Boyle earlier, too. He should keep his yap shut about other performers. They don’t need his criticism. He should concentrate on his own performances.

James is a much bigger person that Adam Lambert. I never did like him when he was on American Idol – Any guy who wears makeup and nail polish really has no room to speak about anybody else. ADAM YOU ARE JUST JEALOUS OF JAMES DURBIN!!!! I have chosen not to watch American Idol because James Durbin is no longer there.

  9. Germain • May 19, 2011 @ 10:04 AM

Carefull James, Adam will bitch slap ya!!

  10. Mary • May 19, 2011 @ 1:23 PM

I’ve watched this show from the beginning the three left are tops. My favorite is Scotty, Haley and Lauren. As for James we haven’t heard the last of him he has a great fan base and when he gets his lucky break Lambert watch out. Like somebody up above said James is young and will grow.

  11. Carolyn • May 19, 2011 @ 1:37 PM

This last show was so boring without James! Haley is far better than other two and has ease of singing anything. We now have 2 country crooners that are good and talented at what they do but to have all doing kinda the same kind of music is beyond me. James needs help to mature his talents but make no mistake; he is very, very talented and gave this show some energy and fun. Go Haley! If Haley does not win; done with this show. I am still not over Adam not winning last year. Insane! Love Stephen Tyler on show. CKB

  12. L1feless • May 19, 2011 @ 2:37 PM

Man I hate Haley…I find that she screams rather than increase her vocal intensity. I think James is a far better talent then Haley. Out of who is left I’m hoping Scotty wins.

  13. Olive • May 19, 2011 @ 6:53 PM

I wanted either Hayley or James to win but now I dont really care as long as its not Scotty

  14. Thibz • May 20, 2011 @ 9:05 AM

Mr. Lambert is rediculous. This kid can sing and so what if he likes to rock or fits in that genre. Adams album was a piece of S**t and honestly it sounded like factory produced garbage. Adam sits with all the other factory music produced people. Hes about as special as a gum ball sitting in a dispenser with hundreds alike. James is that one lucky black gum ball that you only get if your so lucky. Looks like Adam decided to choose another disposible.

  15. SharonS • May 20, 2011 @ 9:51 AM

Adam Lambert still thinks he is the ‘it’ boy still, but he is so ‘last year’. Adam time for you to bend over and shut the hell up!

  16. Albee • May 21, 2011 @ 8:37 PM

Both singers are good. Kiss and makeup lol

  17. Debbie • May 22, 2011 @ 1:02 AM

Adam is the kiss of death-he comes out for James-James gets kicked off-now he doesn’t like him, He comes out & supports Haley-Haley gets kicked off-thank God Lauren & Scotty he doesn’t like you.
Its a shame I used to like the guy-hes changed. But who cares he’s yesterdays news This gave him a week of publicity. You Go James you are a sweetheart & a better person with a great future ahead of you.

  18. ernybear • May 26, 2011 @ 5:05 PM

Rock on James! I totally loved the Judas Priest set on the finale… you are always my vote but congrats to Scotty… he is very talented as is Lauren… lots of talent this season but always you’re my fave…

  19. debbie • May 27, 2011 @ 11:59 AM

I noticed Adam praised everyones performance from lady Gaga Beyonce,U-2 Steven Tyler but didn’t make 1 mention of Judas priest & James-even though it was great & historical for that show-He really is turning me away -I don’t like the new Adam

  20. Judy • June 2, 2011 @ 3:04 PM

omg! James should have won! Adam Lambert should also have won! I think it’s unfair for Adam to say this about James…. James has overcome so much. Having 2 disabilities is so difficult! It would have been wonderful to show the world that people with disabilities can do anything they want in life. so there!

Did everyone miss the part where Adam said James had 100% talent and passion? What part of that was disrespectful? This article left out an important part of Adam’s statements, in which he spoke positively about James’ performance of the Sammy Hagar song, even saying that James had “been on-pitch,” “was note-perfect,” and “he sounded really good.”

Just this morning James tweeted Adam, asking him if they could get together because he wanted to ask Adam some business advice one to one. Adam never said James has no future or that he won’t be successful. That’s just the media trying to stir up a conflict because it brings in more hits on their websites (or viewers on their stations), and therefore generates more income from advertising. (continued below)

  22. Cathy • June 6, 2011 @ 1:10 PM

    (continued from above)
Adam has worked in professional show business for over 10 years, primarily in LA and Hollywood. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience to share, in addition to his phenomenal talent. To date, Adam’s debut album has gone gold in the U.S. and platinum in three other countries. Less than a year after coming in 2nd on Idol he did a world tour (HIS tour, that he designed and planned). In the U.S. alone he sold out almost 70 concerts. This year one of the songs on his debut album was nominated for a Grammy, and his tour video (Glam Nation Live) was released on both DVD and Blue Ray.

Adam has hit the 1 million mark in Twitter followers, and his “Glamberts” are becoming known for crashing computer systems when he suggests a charity or event. He has fans around the world, many who post videos on YouTube requesting that he come to their countries, or come back. Case in point, he performed a concert in Moscow on May 28th, after numerous invitations from Russia and Ukraine. His very much anticipated second album is due out this fall.

Now does his opinion, given with no ill intent, and based upon all that experience and success, hold some weight?

First of all maybe you should read the full comments of what Adam said before you start saying how kind Adam was because from what I read-there were a few things he shouldn’t of said. I am so glad he’s doing so well with that great big list of achievements but he hasn’t won anything yet not like Carrie Underwood & Kelly Clarkson so he’s not the big man everyone makes him out to be. But if james wants to be the better man & get in touch with Adam thats great, it doesn’t change my mind that Adam is not the nice guy I used to think he was and his recent behavior has’nt been all that great-Adam- Leave the 22 year old kid alone unless you are going to help him-don’t try and hurt him-You should be bigger than that.

  24. Cathy • June 10, 2011 @ 4:09 PM

Debbie, my earlier post was to provide balance. I did read all his comments, but only a few were being discussed. As I pointed out, this article left out some of the positive comments Adam reportedly had made. The media decided what to focus on, and it seemed most people were responding to only the negative interpretations provided by the media. I saw posts where people had no idea what Adam has accomplished in the two years since Idol, were judging and condemning him for what they had decided his motivation and attitude were at the time of his reported comments, and were picking sides in a media-driven non-feud.

As I said, I was trying to provide additional information, presenting positive facts to balance the negative information and assumptions. Nowhere did I choose a side between Adam and James. IMO, if Adam did say the things which were reported, he made a mistake in not talking with James first, if he was going to say anything at all. And when the media people rushed to tell James what Adam supposedly said, James should have talked with Adam before responding. They both made the mistake of not contacting each other immediately once the mini media frenzy had begun.

BTW, comparing Adam’s accomplishments to those of Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson may negate your argument, as Kelly was in Season 1, therefore having nine years of post-Idol experience and accomplishments compared to Adam’s two years, and from her Season 4 win until now, Carrie has six years more than Adam. It will be interesting to see where he is at in terms of a successful career six and nine years from now. Time will tell.

  25. debbie • June 11, 2011 @ 4:49 PM

Carrie Underwood won in 2005- she won first grammy in 2007 for best new Artist-so that happened in her 2 years after she won AI. Adam has been out there for 2 years already-has just been nominated this year-for what do you want from me-lost.
Kelly Clarkson won 2002- first album debuted in 2003-Thankful was put off till a year after she won .
her single a moment like this went #1 on the billboard charts. She then won 2 grammys in 2006. which means Adam has 2 more years to get a Grammy cause he already lost to Carrie.
Lets face it he’s good but He’s no lady Gaga-who became famous 2008-2009 didn’t have the American Idol boost-won grammy’s and by the way has 10,880,466 twitter followers-now thats impressive-
