American Idol producer sick of product placement

By Tribute on May 1, 2013 | 11 Comments

Nigel Lythgoe, executive producer of American Idol said he gets “sick to some degree of the (product) integration because (other) people have a different idea of what integration means. For me, it’s a smooth, organic process, whereas for other people, it’s ‘Hi! This is a Coca-Cola!’” At Digital Hollywood, an event sponsored by BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts), Lythgoe described his frustration with the judges having to drink from Coke cups on every show (as seen above). “They’re trying to stretch things all the time. I want to move those damned Coke cups. Especially when (Idol judge) Nicki Minaj is sponsored by Pepsi. It gets on your nerves sometimes when it’s too obvious. You don’t want product forced on you. So we just have to be careful.” ~Sarah Dos Santos

The WORST offender for product placement is TOP CHEF CANADA. Practically every scene in that show prominently displays one of the official sponsors. Beyond tacky. Needless to say, I will NEVER buy any of them.

If Nicki Minaj is sponsored by Pepsi, she shouldn’t be on the show especially when Coke is plastered everywhere. There should be something in the contract about this sorta thing. Pepsi shouldn’t condone it. Such a fail.

Seriously, it’s the product integration that makes him sick?! This show needs to be killed and put out of our misery.

They get over $35 million per year from Coca Cola, AT&T, and Ford. That’s over $100 million per season. If they are so sick of it, give the money back and have a Coke free show.

I’m sick of commercials, but they make me watch them all the time!!

It’s worse in movies and TV. I saw a show in which someone walked into the scene carrying a McDonald’s coffee cup and never drank out of it once. Just carried it around awkwardly. McDonald’s must be trying to push their coffee. Anyway, it was distracting to say the least. Don’t these productions make enough money without resorting to this tackiness?

@Katherine, and in “Hawaii Five-O”, there’s was a guy eating like 5 subs from Subway and talked about how delicious the subs are. That scene looked like a commercial instead of a show.

I’m glad when people in showbiz complain about these things. Everything in media sends messages, and the privilege is being abused.

It’s more likely that Coke is getting ready to drop Idol.
It’s far easier to put a ‘spin’ on the bad press for ‘biting the hand that feeds’, than being dumped and looking like the ex that’s lost their luster.

Seeing those Coca Cola cups on American Idols makes me hate Coke even more.
