American Sniper killer sent to prison psychiatric unit

Eddie Ray Routh, the former U.S. Marine who was found guilty last month of murdering former U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, has been transferred to a Texas prison psychiatric unit.

Chris, whose bestselling autobiography was turned into the movie American Sniper, was shot by Eddie Ray multiple times at a gun range near Fort Worth in February 2013. Chris’s friend, Chad Littlefield, was also killed in the shooting.

According to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Eddie Ray is undergoing diagnostic evaluation in the Jester 4 Psychiatric Unit in Richmond near Houston. Prison officials can’t say how long he will be staying at the facility. Earlier this month Eddie Ray was sent to the Middleton Unit near Abilene to undergo an evaluation and psychological screening that would determine where he would begin serving out his sentence.

In February he was sentenced by a Texas judge to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

His defense lawyers, who were unsuccessful in their attempt to have him found innocent by reason of insanity, said their client had been to hospitals at least four times prior to the murders due to mental illness and had received a diagnosis proclaiming him to be psychotic. ~Suzanne Coolen
