Andy Williams dead at 84

Emmy-winning TV host, singer Andy Williams, died Tuesday night at his home in Branson, Missouri, at the age of 84. He had battled bladder cancer for a year. Williams began singing as a child with his older brothers. They sang at their church and graduated to local radio programs before being discovered by Bing Crosby, who had them join him on his recording of the hit song “Swinging on a Star.” They then appeared in several movies before Andy set out to pursue a solo career. He had several hit singles and earned 18 gold and 3 platinum-certified albums in total. In 1959 he hosted his own TV variety series, The Andy Williams Show, which was picked up as a regular series that ran from 1962 to 1971. Andy became known for giving the Osmond Brothers their start on his show, before they went on to become world famous pop stars. His autobiography, “Moon River and Me: A Memoir,” was released in 2009. He’s survived by his second wife, Debbie, and his three children, Robert, Noelle and Christian, from his first marriage to Claudine Longet. His family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network.
