Anne Hathaway on starvation diet

The already bony Anne Hathaway is being asked to lose 16 pounds to play Fantine in the big screen version of the Broadway musical Les Misérables. A film source told the Daily Mirror: “Anne is playing a destitute factory worker-come-lady of the night. Unfortunately, she only has 15 to 20 days to lose as much weight as possible.” With so little time, Anne has been placed on a diet of 500 calories per day. That’s approximately 1,500 less calories than she would need to eat to maintain her weight. The source added, “Producers have assigned her a personal trainer and she is literally eating nothing more than a couple of apples a day, and some protein – mainly in the form of a shake.” Les Misérables, which also stars Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Helena Bonham Carter, will open in theatres December 14, 2012.

    Tha cannot be healthy….it’s just a role…

    Not healthy at all!

But I guess she does get compensated for doing it and it will make her look better. Super skinny can be darn attractive.

That’s terrible! If I tried that, I would surely get sick and faint. I’d have to stay in bed all day just to recoup my strength. So, how can she even work all day on only that?

A diet that limiting can be very harmful in the long run. Ask any anorexic. I heard more teenage girls in North America die from anorexia than any other illness.

They should have given her more notice, since she’s probably been cast for awhile now. Though it’s not like they are going to fire her if she doesn’t lose all the pounds in time.

well, they made chris evans skinny as capt. america in the “before” shots. i’m sure they could have done that in cgi for her, save the girl from starving. ah hollywood,do you have no shame?

How would she look better? She is already super skinny. Super Skinny chicks are not atttractive…at all..

She should be praised for making a physical sacrifice for her craft, just like Christian Bale was praised for losing all that weight on the Machinist. When a man does something like this, he’s brave and committed and passionate about his work. When a woman does it, she’s a victim somehow. How is that helpful for female actresses who want to the same respect as their male counterparts have?

+1 to Darren…. everyone praised Christian Bale for “The Machinist”…. now everyone is knocking on Hathaway? Double standard much.

ummm- sorry – I was just as disgusted when he did it – I don’t think ANYONE should be forced to go thru that – I am anorexic – a recovering one – but I still have battles with it – it is not something I would ask anyone to do for any job – no matter how much money was involved

Seriously? She’s like a pencil as it is. Losing more will probably make her extremely sick. If I was told to do that for a role, I would quit. Noone can tell anyone how to look, role or no role. Oh and Trevor, will you stop being a creeper?!

Anne Hathaway seems like one of the few actresses out there that still has a good head on her shoulders and and class. IF a) this story is true, and b) she feels that she would still like to go through with the role – then all the power to her.

As Darren mentioned, when I watched the Machinist… I swore it was CGI. When I read that it wasn’t, I convinced myself he was a nut job (esp. since he was still in between batman movies where he would need to gain back the weight/muscle). However, I give him a ton of respect for being so disciplined and dedicated to his craft (acting/entertainment).

It’s not like she’s Lindsay Lohan where she actually NEEDS the publicity and money.

She just shot Batman, just ask Christian Bale tips on losing weight.

she’s a big girl…she shouldnt lose more weight. why dont they find a thinner actress that looks more like the starving Fantine

This is the woman who used to date a notorious con man. I don’t think she’s that smart.

Nowhere in the script does it technically say that Fantine was starving…and to work in a factory you have to have some meat on your bones otherwise you can’t pull a 16-18 hour shift like they did during the industrial revolution. And Fantine did have a few good years behind her, then things just started going downhill….but Cam Macintosh is famous for preferring his actors to be thin. (He called Jodie Prenger too fat to play Nancy-who in the Dickens book was described as “plump”)
