Antonio Banderas in talks to play Castro

Spanish actor Antonio Banderas may be taking on the role of Fidel Castro in the upcoming film Castro’s Daughter, a biography about the Cuban leader’s daughter Alina Fernandez who fled to the United States in 1993 by pretending to be a Spanish tourist. The biopic, to be directed by English filmmaker Michael Radford, will be based on the book Fernandez released after escaping, which revealed details of what it was like living in the country under her father’s rule — she was strongly opposed to his political views and governing practices. Fernandez has reportedly asked for Banderas personally to star in her movie. “I have been a huge fan of Antonio for years, and hope to see him play my father. I think he has a phenomenal charisma, and think he has the nerve to play the role perfectly,” she told the Latin American Herald Tribune. “I’m very excited that he would consider this.” There has been no word yet whether Banderas has officially agreed yet.

The actor was most recently seen playing a plastic surgeon in The Skin I Live In and voiced the sly cat from the Shrek series in the spin-off film Puss in Boots. He also stars in the upcoming action flick Haywire alongside Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, and Channing Tatum.
