Former American Idol contestant Michael Johns died from what was reported to be a blood clot last Friday at the age of 35, but The Orange County Coroner’s Office is “deferring the cause of death…pending toxicology reports.” Michael, originally from Australia, competed on season seven of the talent show, finishing eighth. After touring with the American Idol contestants following the finale, Michael performed with David Foster, worked on a documentary soundtrack, hosted charity events and released two albums.
Further tests are now being done to see if drugs and/or alcohol could have contributed to his death. On Thursday, just one day before Michael died, he visited a doctor after spraining his ankle. He was in severe pain, with a swollen leg up to his knee. It’s believed the doctor prescribed pain medication to Michael and law enforcement was informed Michael drank heavily some time before his death, which raises questions as to the actual cause of death. Michael is survived by his wife, Stacey Vuduris, whom he married shortly before he was chosen to be on American Idol. His family released a statement which reads: “Our family is devastated by the passing of our beloved Michael, a wonderful husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend.” ~Andrea Hodgins
