Thanos has always lurked in the shadows in the previous Marvel films, but he finally gets to be the big bad villain and kick Avenger ass in Avengers: Infinity War. Thanos wants to take over the universe, and for that he needs six Infinity Stones to complete his Infinity Gauntlet. His goal is to eliminate half the population to strike a balance, thereby fixing the overpopulation problem.
The film opens with Thanos (Josh Brolin) getting his hands on the Space Stone from the Tesseract. He defeats Thor and Loki and even the Hulk. Hulk survives and immediately reaches out to Dr. Strange and together, they go inform Tony Stark about the massive disaster about to unleash.
Thanos sends his men to Earth to retrieve two other stones: the Mind Stone from Vision and the Time Stone from Dr. Strange. While Tony Stark, Spider-Man and the Hulk are helping Dr. Strange fight off Thanos’ men, the Avengers come to Vision’s rescue and save him.
In the meantime, Thanos goes to Knowhere to retrieve the Reality Stone, and battles it out with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Fans of the MCU are probably aware that Gamora and Thanos go way back. The two are given more screen time to show their relationship. Finally, the big battle happens in Wakanda, with Black Panther and his army joining forces with the Avengers to try and defeat Thanos.
When characters from massive multi-films come together, roping in over a dozen characters in the Marvel Universe, it’s certainly a challenge to keep track of everything. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo made sure that every superhero had lines and played a hand in the battle against Thanos.
That being said, the audience has to pay close attention as major story lines are interwoven together to keep that narrative on track. It does complicate things if you haven’t seen the previous films or are not aware of the characters’ relationships with each other.
The Russo brothers sure knew how to balance the various story arcs, whether it’s the Thanos-Gamora backstory or the Vision-Scarlet Witch love story. Together, the pieces finally fit the massive puzzle that we, as the audience, were trying to solve. It all makes sense in the end. However, I was not prepared for the numerous deaths that took place. The ending was quite a twist and, well, it makes the next film an eager follow-up. That’s one long, long wait.
The standout character was Josh Brolin’s Thanos. He wasn’t your typical bad guy out to take over the world. I mean, yes, theoretically speaking, but his intentions are noble. He wants to get rid of overpopulation and makes the best use of the world’s resources. There are some scenes that make Thanos incredibly human, and we sympathize with him. Josh is able to do that with ease.
The humor was another aspect that stood out. The dialogue and one-liners, especially between Chris Pratt and Chris Hemsworth, were hilarious. Even Robert Downey Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch were humorous as they exchanged banter on-screen. Who knew the two could be such a dynamic duo! Overall, the film will delight fans of the Marvel Universe and entertain moviegoers — if you can keep up, that is. ~Marriska Fernandes
