Benedict Cumberbatch had Carlton surname

Benedict CumberbatchBenedict Cumberbatch used to use Carlton as his surname. The Imitation Game star thinks his family surname sounds like a ”fart in a bath” and didn’t think it would catch on if he became famous, so he used his middle name Carlton, which is also his grandfather’s moniker, until his agent convinced him to go with his real last name.

He said: ”I started off as Benedict Carlton, which is my middle name, my grandfather’s name. Cumberbatch sounds like a fart in a bath … It is even funnier in an English accent. But an agent who was wiser than me told me it was a good name. People have had fun with it and they continue to!”

As well as using his real last name, the 38-year-old actor – who recently married wife Sophie Hunter – admitted his interest in Buddhism has also paid a large part in helping him to be so successful.

Speaking to film critics in Los Angeles, where he is promoting his latest movie The Imitation Game, he is quoted by The Sun as saying: ”I did teach in Tibet when I was younger. I was teaching English to Tibetan Buddhist monks at a monastery. I was in quarters with spiders. I was interested in Buddhism and I am still … very much so. It is very helpful.”
