Billie Eilish makes history at the 62nd annual Grammy Awards

The 2020 Grammy Awards ceremony took place on Sunday night in Los Angeles, with Billie Eilish breaking the record for the youngest artist to take home four major awards since 1981.

Not only does this make Eilish the second artist to achieve this victory, the first being Christopher Cross, but also the first female to do so. In addition, Eilish is the youngest solo performer to ever win Album of the Year, taking the crown from Taylor Swift, who won best album at age of 20 for “Fearless.”

Although it was a night of accomplishments for many talented artists, there was a palpable cloud of sadness over the Staples Center, as a few hours before the ceremony, news broke of the tragic passing of the legendary Kobe Bryant.

Crowds of Kobe fans gathered outside the Staples Center prior to the Grammys to mourn the late basketball icon.

Lizzo opened the ceremony by performing “Cuz I Love You,” dedicating the song to Kobe Bryant, “Tonight is for Kobe!” shouted Lizzo. Alicia Keys and Boyz II Men followed up with a heart-felt performance also paying tribute to Kobe. Later on, John Legend, DJ Khaled, and YG paid tribute to Nipsey Hussle, and Kobe Bryant, alongside Meek Mill, Roddy Rich and Kirk Franklin.

However, the night was not all sad, especially for the young, talented Billie Eilish who walked home with a grand total of five Grammys, four of which are in major categories. She took home Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “Bad Guy” and Album of the Year for “When We Fall Asleep Where Do We Go.” She also took home Best Pop Vocal Album.

Other highlights of the night include Lizzo, who took home three Grammys, a performance by Rap Album of the Year winner Tyler the Creator (who let out a controversial speech), followed by a tribute to Prince by Usher and Sheila E., and other performances by Camila Cabello, Lil Nas X and K-pop sensation BTS just to name a few.

Demi Lovato also had significant and emotional night as she performed for the first time since her suspected overdose in 2018. When she tried to sing her new song “Anyone,” which she had written right after her overdose, she had to restart, after choking up during the performance.

The Jonas Brothers performed their latest single, “What A Man Gotta Do,” along with a preview to an unreleased track — however the performance will be most-remembered for the food stuck in Nick’s teeth. LOL. Following the performance Nick poked fun at himself.
