For the second straight weekend Dog Man took the top spot at the box office. The animated film brought in another 13.7 million, but saw a steep 62 per cent drop, which brings its domestic total to 54.1 million. However, with a reported budget of $40 million, Dog Man looks to be a win for DreamWorks and Universal.
Coming in second place was the Valentine’s Day horror-slasher film Heart Eyes, which opened to 8.5 million. With positive word of mouth, Sony may be disappointed with the opening — the film has a reported budget of $18 million, and when you take into account the trend of horror films experiencing large second weekend drops and the release of Captain America: Brave New World next week, profitability is far from a sure thing.
In third place was the new Ke Huy Quan action film Love Hurts. It’s not the start Universal was hoping for as the film brought in 5.8 million. With a reported budget of $18 million and a heavy hitter releasing next week, it’s going to be an uphill battle for the film to be a box office success.
Still hanging around in fourth place was Mufasa: The Lion King, as it dropped 38 per cent, and brought in another 3.9 million in its eighth week of release. The film’s domestic total currently sits at 235.2 million. With a top five finish next week, the film will tie Deadpool & Wolverine and Moana 2 for the most time spent in the domestic top five for a 2024 film.
Rounding out the top five was Companion as it brought in 3.2 million in its second week, a 68 per cent drop. The film’s domestic total now sits at 15.4 million. It may have been a steeper drop than what Warner Bros. was wanting but with a reported budget of $10 million, the film is still in good shape.
