Canadian series Schitt’s Creek sweeps Emmys 2020

The 72nd Annual Emmy Awards took place in a virtual event on Sunday. Jimmy Kimmel hosted the show, saying: “What’s happening tonight is not important. It’s not going to stop COVID. It’s not going to put out the fires, but it’s fun. And right now, we need fun.”

Canadian show Schitt’s Creek swept the comedy awards, nabbing top honors in all seven categories. Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy won for best comedy actress and actor, while Annie Murphy took the Emmy for best supporting actress.

Daniel Levy took home three awards — best supporting actor, comedy writing and best director of a comedy series alongside Andrew Cividino. This was a historical win, something no other comedy has achieved before.

The most Emmys of the night were taken by HBO’s Watchmen, earning 11 awards. It was named best limited series, while Regina King took home the outstanding lead actress award.

A surprising win came for Zendaya, who won for her work on the HBO series Euphoria. At 24, she made history as the the youngest to win an Emmy for lead actress in a drama. She beat out nominees Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer for Killing Eve, Jennifer Aniston for The Morning Show, Laura Linney for Ozark and Olivia Colman for The Crown.

   Congratulations to Schitt$ Creek and the marvelous cast for their many wins. It being a Canadian show/cast and winning on a US awards ceremony is something for the record books.
   My only complaint is all the other shows listed above I’ve never seen. Why are only streaming specialty shows up for nominations? Regular tv is still out there and I’m sure there are now a lot of actors/actresses out there now wondering if they have to jump ship to go to those cable shows if they want to be seen. I didn’t even watch the awards show last night as I knew it would not be worth my time because of not know the shows nominated. And you wonder why ratings are going down.

   Kudos to Billy Crudup and The Morning Show. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen and Apple TV puts out a lot of amazing programming. They don’t have the quantity that Netflix has, but every show I’ve seen of theirs is of the highest quality. Billy Crudup turned in an amazing, unique, incredible performance and he’s been turning in amazing performances for years, but especially in The Morning Show. It’s about time his talent was recognized. Congratulations!

   I heard of Schitt$ Creek, but I did not care to know the premise or watch it to learn about it. I LOVED Corner Gas as my go-to Canadian comedy show which I watched while it was still on the air. But now I find it funny that Schitt$ Creek has ended it’s run and as won a lot of Emmy’s, that I am now interested in watching it to see what it’s all about. I’m sure Schitt$ Creek will find new life in reruns and syndication after the Emmy win. Good for them.
