If turning the popular game Battleship into a movie seemed like a far stretch to you, consider this. Hasbro, makers of the popular children’s board game Candy Land, announced today that they’ve given Columbia Pictures the go-ahead to adapt the popular game into a full-length feature film. And the studio has big plans for the film. Adam Sandler is reportedly in talks to not only star in the film, but also to produce it through his company, Happy Madison and Kevin Lima, the man behind Disney’s Enchanted, is set to direct.
The project was previously attached to Universal Pictures with writers comparing the story to “Lord of the Rings, but set in the world of candy,” according to an interview with EW last year. Sandler, however, is looking into giving the screenplay a fresh spin. “Candy Land is more than just a game,” says Doug Belgrad, President of Columbia Pictures. “The world of Candy Land offers an extraordinary canvas upon which to create a fantastical, live-action adventure family film with a larger than life part for Adam.”
