Movie PosterEven though summer is winding down, the box office sure isn’t.

On the last weekend of August, one new wide release edged out previous competitors to claim the top spot at the box office. That film was Candyman, a “spiritual sequel” to the 1992 film of the same name, directed by Nia DaCosta and produced and co-written by horror connoisseur Jordan Peele. It was no surprise the Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Teyonah Parris-led horror film did well — the combination of Peele’s dedicated fanbase and those nostalgic for the original Candyman propelled the film to easy success this weekend. Coming in first place to take the top spot from Free GuyCandyman premiered with an opening gross of $22.4 million.

Dropping to second place, Ryan Reynold’s Free Guy performed well to take in another $13.5 million. That brings the action-comedy’s total to $79.3 million over three weeks. The film has shown solid holding power to this point and that should continue at least until Disney’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings arrives next weekend.

Last weekend’s family-friendly film PAW Patrol: The Movie had a solid $13 million debut. This weekend, that gross dropped by approximately half to put the animated film in third place with $6.6 million, bringing its two-week total to $24 million.

Officially breaking the $100 million mark, Disney’s Jungle Cruise starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt continued to hold up strong, coming in fourth place with a $5 million take. Now in its fifth week of release, the adventure film has grossed a total of $100.1 million.

Rounding out the top five, horror-thriller sequel Don’t Breathe 2 starring Stephen Lang brought in $2.8 million, narrowly beating The Suicide Squad and Respect. ~Cassandra Coleman
