Celebrities help relief efforts in Haiti

Brad Pitt and AngelinaBrad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have given $1 million to Doctors Without Borders to help support relief efforts in Haiti, following the devastating earthquake that hit the country on Tuesday. It’s unclear whether other celebrities have donated, but many are speaking out to ask the public to donate to various relief aid organizations. Oprah Winfrey is urging viewers of her TV talk show to donate to the Red Cross, saying, “This is a time where we, as a global nation, should come together and support those who are in need.” Coldplay singer Chris Martin is asking people to support Oxfam, Unicef’s youngest Ambassador, Disney star Selena Gomez, is asking people to donate to the organization, while singer Wyclef Jean immediately flew to Haiti, his native country, after hearing the news, to help out in any way he can. “I cannot stress enough what a human disaster this is, and idle hands will only make this tragedy worse,” he said in a statement, adding: “We must act now.” ~Alexandra Heilbron

Excellent, I’m not surprised that Angelina & Brad are donating, hopefully many more people will donate what they can.

  2. mandee • January 14, 2010 @ 3:28 PM

me either tg, its why i spend so much time trying to defend these people. so far they are the only celebs that have been confirmed as donating money where its needed. this is awesome news.

  3. tributegirl • January 14, 2010 @ 3:45 PM

This is awesome news, it’s a real tragedy what’s happened, so the more help that can be given, the better. Other celebs donate to different things too, which is great, but these two seem to donate to everything. Sometimes I wonder if it is only for their own publicity, or if their hearts are really in it. They do seem to be very genuine though. But even if it is only for publicity, at least it is a lot of money to extremely good causes.

  4. Nancy • January 14, 2010 @ 6:15 PM

It is very nice of them to donate to all of the charities and foundations that they donate to. The thing I find with these two is that they always want the public to know just how much they are donating. They never just go ‘anonymous’. They always make sure to get their publicity out of it, as you said, Tributegirl. Also, can anyone honestly say, after reading the above article, that they DON’T think Oprah gave money for this cause? Oprah just doesn’t need this to be about her…it is about helping those in need in Haiti.

  5. Nancy • January 14, 2010 @ 6:16 PM

Just to those who donated their time, means more than just giving money.

  6. demigod • January 15, 2010 @ 12:04 AM

Please, Oprah is too busy expanding her empire. She gets her fair share of publicity thru her own multimedia company and her daily show.
Bradgelina have adopted 2 impoverished kids. I’d say that’s donating time for a good cause.

  7. Nancy • January 15, 2010 @ 12:23 AM

I’m not talking about Brad and Angie’s adopted kids..I am referring to THE ARTICLE…donating their time to help Haiti. Just as Brad once donated his time to help New Orleans. THAT is what people will remember, not the dollar amount.

  8. demigod • January 15, 2010 @ 2:51 AM

Oprah doesn’t do anything low key either.
Sometimes donating just money is more helpful, practical, and realistic.

  10. Joey • January 15, 2010 @ 3:51 PM

Imagine if every A actor donated just 1% of their ridiculous income. Just Imagine.

  11. PM • January 15, 2010 @ 4:43 PM

Why don’t some of these celebrities who are urging the poor people to donate put their money where their mouth is and give some of their own money.
Us regular folks don’t make 2 million dollars a movie and we don’t own bunch of 2 million dollars mansions. We don’t own yatchs and islands in the Bahamas or houses in Lake Como.
Like the other guy said 1% percent of their income we can’t even make in a yr.
So Oprah go a head and give one of your mansions.

  12. Moviefan • January 15, 2010 @ 4:56 PM

You guys have got that right. I heard on the radio that George Clooney’s gonna host a telethon to raise money. Instead of that, why doesn’t he just donate $1 million and send out a challenge to other celebrities to do the same. Even if they each donated $100,000, Haiti would have more than enough money in no time if that happened.

  13. tributegirl • January 15, 2010 @ 6:06 PM

But how do we know that they aren’t donating a lot of money? They may be, plus they may be encouraging everybody else to donate what they can.

  14. kirin • January 15, 2010 @ 9:00 PM

angelina and brad’s combined income is around 50 million a year…the average american family income is around 50 thousand. them giving 1 million would be like the average family giving 1000 dollars, so at least thats something. but stil, considering how much money these people waste on ridiculous things, like 10,000 dollar outfits, they can afford to give a whole lot more.

  15. mandee • January 16, 2010 @ 12:21 AM

moviefan, maybe george is planning on matching whatever the fundraiser brings in? either way, at least hes trying to get people to help 😀

kirin do you mean angelina and brad should donate more? they donate their time, their money, they have their own charities, they have taken in needy children who may not have a life or home otherwise. i can understand if you mean other celebs because i agree completely. but i think brad and angelina do more than their fair share.

  16. Thibz • January 16, 2010 @ 7:07 AM

Well its nice to see thier money going to a good cause, as opposed to 6 of the same sports cars or 5 houses which im sure everyone needs. Great work guys.

  17. Jo-Anne • January 17, 2010 @ 12:51 AM

it would appear that donations are pouring in from many areas, that is wonderful to hear…through the efforts of many celebrities and non-celebrities Haiti will hopefully receive sufficient relief to aid in their rebuilding…

  18. tributegirl • January 18, 2010 @ 9:07 PM

Last I heard it was $22.2 million donated by Canadians! Way to go, Canada!!!

  19. Nancy • January 18, 2010 @ 10:50 PM

And Ottawa is supposed to match Canadian donations, aren’t they?

  20. tributegirl • January 19, 2010 @ 4:34 PM

I believe so, how awesome is that!

  21. Lisa • January 19, 2010 @ 8:09 PM

I have already donated to Haiti and not because some rich celebity asked me to. I think the celebs should donate first before they ask average people to do so. And by the way, Madoona could have gone for more than $250,000.

  22. kia • January 22, 2010 @ 3:40 AM

yeah…i think all celebrities need to donate..should be like a law…if u make millions..why not help out? i dontated wat we could..I think anything under a million (like 250k) for some of these celebrites…seriously? if it happened to where they lived..bet they would want some global help…again…it was NATURE…no human could control that….so we should all help..cuz Mother Earth may strike anytime..anywhere…

  23. Jo-Anne • January 22, 2010 @ 10:08 AM

well, I think if you can afford a $4.00 fancy coffee at Starbucks, you can afford a $4 donation…every bit helps for sure when you’re talking millions of donations, amounts shouldn’t be dictated for anyone, we all know who we are and what parameters we have to give….

  24. nmjaxx9 • January 22, 2010 @ 11:23 PM

Yes and have we forgotten about the rap artists who claim they blow millions on their cars rims jewlery and houses and “make it rain” on people. Where are these rappers now? They claim they are so rich and have a lot of money…..welll now is the time to put that money to good use! GOD BLESS Haiti. Prayers are with them.

  25. Ruth • January 23, 2010 @ 10:45 AM

The only thing i wanted to say is that i understand why the celebrities that donate “publicly” do it. There are a lot of people out there that think all celebrities are selfish and don’t want to help others, and just want to keep all there money to themselves. Unless they do it and get some publicity out of it then, then those people just keep on thinking that and hating the celebrity because they don’t realize they do try to help. I am in agreement that most celebrities make way too much money and some that donate could do more but there are those out there trying to help.

  26. kta • January 23, 2010 @ 8:13 PM

I dont agree that celebs should donate anonymously. I want to know that they are putting their MILLIONS where their mouth is, so to speak. I bet not as many as you think are donating even one percent of their income. Conan just walked away with 40 MILLION for NOT WORKING. Who here can comprehend that kind of money and not even having to work for it. I am tired of celebs asking us; waitresses, sales clerks, delivery drivers, etc for money. Tell them to shut up and give their OWN money. They make me sick

  27. kta • January 23, 2010 @ 8:17 PM

also, I agree with lisa. Madonna gave 250,000??? Give me a break. That is NOTHING…NOTHING compared to the money she has. The person who has little and gives what they can are greater in the eyes of God than the wealthy who give just a little.

  28. kta • January 23, 2010 @ 8:20 PM

AND…so come on you filthy rich celebs…lets hear how much YOU are giving. I challenge you all to outgive each other and let us hear about it.

  29. kta • January 23, 2010 @ 8:21 PM

sorry but this is really a sore spot for me. I am glad other people feel the same way.

  30. Nancy • January 23, 2010 @ 8:48 PM

Didn’t Forbes list just have Jay-Z and Beyonce as earning over $120 million last year (2008-2009)? I didn’t hear how much they donated but the majority of celebs who donated, gave $1 million. I just don’t think that celebrities should get all the publicity that they do because of donating $1 million. That’s like you or I donating $100.

  31. tributegirl • January 24, 2010 @ 7:38 PM

Well, I think it should be up to them if their donation is made public or not. Some of the celebs (Johnny Depp) value their privacy very much, and may not want us knowing how much, if any, they are donating. I also feel that they should donate a lot more, but who am I to tell them what to do with THEIR money? Who are any of us to tell them what to do with THEIR money? They encourage us to donate, but aren’t telling us what to do with OUR money. And I know they make insane amounts of money, but is that their fault? Nope, they got lucky to have either landed that type of career or been born into it.

  32. Nancy • January 24, 2010 @ 8:32 PM

I understand that, Tributegirl and totally agree with you. I’m not blaming the celebs. I blame the media for making such a big deal out of this one or that one just donated $1 million whereas the majority of us don’t even so much as get a thank you when we donate. Not that I care. I donate when and if I can because the need is there and I don’t EXPECT anything in return. I think this kind of media exposure just makes celebs look really bad because it kinda makes them look cheap considering they live so high on the hog. A lot of them spend more on a birthday party for themselves and I just find it sickening that they have all this material stuff while the other side of the world starves.

  33. Nancy • January 24, 2010 @ 8:35 PM

Wait! Did we just disagree? OMG! We did! And no fight..?? LOL

  34. Sarah • January 25, 2010 @ 9:51 AM

It’s great to see that so many of you have your priorities straight today. You talk about celebrities and their selfishness but look what you all have decided to focus your energy on in the face of this tragedy? Does it matter why or how much celebrities or regular people decided to donate or only that we do? As a result these desperate people might have a chance of survival and understand the people around the world care about them and want to make better this horrendous thing that has happened. I believe in the goodness of people and you are all better than this.

  35. tributegirl • January 26, 2010 @ 1:11 PM

Oooooooh, Nancy, you are in for it now! hahahhahahahhaa!!!
No, I totally see what you are saying, they have not a care in the world, will never have to wonder where their next meal is coming from, while others in this world are starving to death, no clothes, no home, etc. And that IS unfair, but for whatever reason, celebs get paid an insane amount of money, and I feel that since they’ve earned it (?), it’s theirs, who am I to tell them what to do with it? Although I think it would be really nice for them to donate massive amounts, and would definAtely make them look better in the average joe’s eyes.

  36. Nancy • January 26, 2010 @ 5:10 PM

That’s it! It’s ON, girl!! Hahahahaha.
