Charlie Hunnam’s Fifty Shades of Grey salary was only $125K

Even though the official reason for Charlie Hunnam dropping out of Fifty Shades of Grey was due to his the filming schedule for his Sons of Anarchy television show, it’s believed he resigned due to creative and financial reasons. His TV show winds up filming for the season on October 21, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and Fifty Shades isn’t due to begin shooting until November. Sources claim Charlie, a talented screenwriter who penned the script for Brad Pitt’s upcoming movie Vlad, wanted changes. He submitted detailed script notes to the producers, which were well-received, but when he asked for further script approval, his request was denied.

Additionally, a source claims Charlie’s salary for the film was a mere $125,000, even though the movie is expected to be a blockbuster due to the popularity of the book upon which it’s based. Combine that with the fact that following the announcement that Charlie had signed to play the lead role in the film, Universal had to hire bodyguards for an appearance he made to promote his TV series, after which two other appearances were cancelled – and it’s easy to understand why he dropped out. Ironically, author EL James’ first choice to play Christian Grey, Robert Pattinson, refused to discuss the role with producers, and Garrett Hedlund, who was “heavily courted” for the role, turned it down flat. With only three weeks before filming is scheduled to start, the producers are scrambling to find another actor. [poll id=”487″]

First, if you’re hired as an actor, you aren’t the screenwriter. Secondly, he was crazy to ever agree to that pittance for a major film like that.

I would have taken the pittance since I am sure there would be a part 2, 3, 4…10. Dude would have locked himself into some serious dough. And if they are looking, I would gladly take the $125K. I may not quite have the looks or talent needed but the book is drivel anyway.

Tough call. As most of us are unemployed most of the year, $125k TO ME is a huge salary. But if I were on a TV series already, I would rightly turn up my nose at it. It’s a function of supply and demand.
You will not offer Tom Cruise or an A List actor the same salary as a nobody from South Dakota in his first film.
he did the right thing. For him.

He has the right to ask for changes to the script as part of the conditions for him taking the role. (Many people direct and act their own movie, one can stand on more than one feet), I wish more people did that with a lot of book adaptations.

The salary offer is very low for the movie that will rake in billions (especially because it’s a very small cast, unlike let’s say LOTR that had thousands of minor roles and extras to pay as well as a large cast).

And there is the fact that such a controversial genre can lock him in to be “The guy who did the soft porn movie” for the rest of his life.

Not surprising that other real actors have also turned down this role. They know this will hurt their career. And not just because they will be playing along side Dakota Johnson (as Anastasia). But everyone knows the movie will never be as good as the books.

Seriously 125K, he said no??!!! I would dressed as Christian Grey for that money. I haven’t read the book, and I will do the role for that money… Actors are way too greedy!

Wow, they Forget that lots of people are out of work, and Never or Rarely get paid that kind of dough!!! WOW again, I’d Be Happy to accept that much money!! Not many ppl get paid that much for a few months work!

$125 000 isn’t much for a movie expecting to make millions.
First 50% goes to Uncle Sam.
Then 5% to 10% goes to his agent.
Then there’s the cost of his other hired staff (ie:publicist, etc)….which leaves him with about $50 000 or less.
But he also has other costs such as flight, hotel, displacement cost etc..
So what’s left for 6-8 months of shooting…$125 000 is not much.

That’s a joke considering he is a rising actor, because of Pacific Rim and SOA. But, he dodged a bullet. The script is probably terrible and only relates to one demographic. Tweens.
