Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 dominates weekend box office

This weekend had a variety of films making their debut, but it was the animated film Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 that won the box office race, bringing in $35 million and a Tribute rating of 4.5 stars. This film marks the fourth-biggest September debut, after Hotel Transylvania. Prisoners, in its second week running, fell to second at the box office, earning $11.27 million and Tribute rating of 4 stars. Formula 1 drama Rush, starring Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl, debuted in third with $10.3 million and a high Tribute rating of 4.9 stars. Fox Searchlight’s Baggage Claim opened with $9.3 million and a star rating of 2.75, in the fourth spot at the box office. Rounding out the top five was Joseph Gordon Levitt’s directorial debut, Don Jon. Also starring Scarlett Johansson, the film brought in $9 million and Tribute rating of 3.2 stars. Also in the top ten: Insidious: Chapter 2,  The Family, Instructions Not Included, We’re the Millers and Lee Daniels’ The Butler.
