Comedians come together to fight anti-abortion legislation

On Sunday, January 19, some of Hollywood’s most famous comedians, including Sarah Silverman and Zach Galifianakis, came together to perform at Largo at the Coronet on La Cienega Blvd to help benefit the Texas Abortion Fund. The fund is part of a nationwide initiative called “A is For” which helps fights legislations across the United States which restricts reproductive rights. All proceeds from the benefit on Sunday night went towards Texas and the Whole Women’s Health Fund, Lilith Fund, Fund Texas Women, and TEA Fund. The event was completely sold out and some paid up to $100 for a single ticket. The event organizers, Martha Plimpton and Sarah Thyre, were still tallying the money raised the next day, but the ticket fee along with Internet donations, may bring the total amount to approximately $20,000. Even with several thousand people attending and showing support, the event had strict security as there were several anti-abortion protestors picketing the event. Along with comedians, the event also had a spur of the moment auction for a white feather hat owned by Phyllis Diller, which saw a bidding war between actors Michael Sheen and Mark Mariano. Mariano eventually won the hat, shelling out $750, but Sheen generously matched his bid and donated his money to the cause. ~Brie Davis
