Deadpool reigns supreme at weekend box office

Deadpool faced, literally, zero competition this weekend from newcomers, and held onto the number one spot with ease. The antihero action comedy has been in theaters for just over a week and it’s already earned over $430 million worldwide, not including this weekend’s $55 million haul at the North American box office. Theatergoers are digging Ryan Reynolds in this new superhero role, and so are most Tribute.ca users, who gave his R-rated (in the US) feature a solid 3.7 star rating.

In a very distant second is the animated comedy Kung Fu Panda 3, starring Jack Black as beloved butt-kicking panda Po, which earned $12.5 million this weekend. It’s a minor take for the sequel, however, so don’t feel bad for the family friendly flick. In its four weekends in theaters, Kung Fu Panda 3 has managed to sit comfortably in the top three, while officially earning over $115 million at the domestic box office. And with over 120 votes, it’s also earned 3.9 stars from Tribute.ca users.

Deadpool‘s massive popularity and utter domination of the box office has naturally affected the numbers for other non-blockbuster releases, including the Biblical epic Risen, which only earned $11.8 million in its opening weekend. Despite its disappointing box office performance, Tribute.ca users awarded this drama 4 stars.

The horror flick The Witch is yet another casualty of the superhero takeover, opening in fourth with just $8.7 million. The story about an English family in the 17th century experiencing inexplicable supernatural occurrences received 2.8 stars from Tribute.ca users.

Dropping from third to fifth, the romantic comedy How to Be Single also suffered the blockbuster blues, only adding another $8.2 million to the modest $31 million its secured so far domestically. Tribute.ca users gave this flick about young single ladies in New York City a 3.5 star rating.
