Dexter: Original Sin posterIf you’re a fan of the hit TV series Dexter, which ran eight seasons from 2006 to 2013, you won’t want to miss Dexter: Original Sin, which debuts today on Paramount+.

Contest winners and media were invited to screen the first episode of the new series, which features a young Dexter, who’s studying medicine at college. His father and sister Debra are also featured in the series and the original Dexter Morgan, Michael C. Hall, plays a small role in the beginning and narrates the series.

It has a lot of references and nods to the original show, which got laughs of recognition from the premiere audience. We also find out how he became a blood splatter technician rather than a doctor and meet some of the faces we love from the original series (younger, and played by different actor, but completely recognizable).

Debra, who is still in high school, is her usually potty-mouth self, although she hasn’t reached the hilarious levels of insane cursing that she does as an adult. Christian Slater plays Dex’s father, Harry; Christina Milian plays Lieutenant Maria Guerta; Patrick Dempsey plays Captain Aaron Spencer; Sarah Michelle Gellar plays Tanya Martin; James Martinez plays Angel Batista; and Alex Shimizu plays Vince Masuka, complete with that crazy laugh that kept the audience in stitches.

Dexter fans didn’t know what to expect, but while chatting with several after the showing, we were unanimous — it was a great debut episode and even better than we could have expected.

Catch the show starting today on Paramount+. You can also binge the original eight seasons of Dexter and the follow-up mini-series, Dexter: New Blood on Paramount+! ~Alexandra Heilbron

The first episode was fantastic. I really didn’t have high expections, but now I can’t wait to see the rest of the series. And I hope it’s not just a one year show like the other, although I guess they have a limited time because they can only go so far as a prequel.
