If you’re a fan of the game Dungeons & Dragons, then you will love this movie. If you’ve never been a fan and you’re not sure you’ll like the movie, throw those fears aside — you don’t have to know anything about the game to enjoy Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. I have never played the game, don’t really know what it’s about and wasn’t really sure to expect.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a comedy adventure that provides plenty of laughs, while keeping you invested in what’s happening to the two lead characters: Edgin, played by Chris Pine, and Holga, played by Michelle Rodriguez.
There’s no romance between these two – but there is a firm, unwavering bond of friendship. When the film opens, they’re in prison, but they soon find themselves out and on a mission. Edgin, who has a daughter Kira, and Holga, who loves Kira as if she were her own, want to find the girl, whom they hope has been in good hands with their accomplice Forge (Hugh Grant).
However, Forge doesn’t want to give Kira up, and his circumstances have changed for the better since they last saw him. He’s a powerful, wealthy man, so Edgin and Holga have to figure out a way to get Kira – who believes her father chose to leave her — back.
Along their journey, they’re helped by Xenk (Regé-Jean Page), an altruistic hero, and two young wizards of varying powers. The hijinks that ensue are hilarious and the challenges they face will have you biting your nails.
Edgin and Holga match each other’s banter perfectly, and when it comes to battling the bad guys, Holga more than holds her own. Rodriguez plays her with heart and strength, dry wit and an enviable sense of self and independence. Chris Pine as Edgin is dashing and jovial, and his ability to bluff his way out of sticky situations is extremely entertaining.
As the villain, Hugh Grant is someone you’d love to hate, if only he weren’t so comical; and former Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page is like a Disney prince come to life.
Since watching the film, I’ve met several people who also thought this movie wasn’t going to be their cup of tea because they’d never played DnD, but who were just as surprised as I was that they loved it. I completely recommend this film no matter which gender you are and to anyone above age eight (there is some fighting in it with weapons). This is a popcorn movie and a highly entertaining crowd pleaser. ~Alexandra Heilbron
