Dwayne Johnson confirmed for comic book adaptations

By Tribute on March 6, 2012 | 8 Comments

The Rock is ready to rumble in some new comic book movies scheduled for release sometime in the next two years. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has signed on to star in Joe and Anthony Russo‘s action thriller Ciudad. The wrestler-turned-actor will be playing a mercenary that is hired by a drug lord to rescue his kidnapped daughter. The Russo brothers are adapting the script from the upcoming graphic novel they co-wrote with Ande Parks, which is being published by Oni Press. And, as if that wasn’t enough, Variety has confirmed that Johnson has also accepted an offer to star in the film adaptation of Hercules: The Thracian Wars, based on the graphic novel by Steve Moore. In the meantime, Johnson can be seen alongside Channing Tatum and Bruce Willis in the upcoming action movie G.I. Joe: Retaliation, in theaters June 29. ~Rodrigo Cokting

Isn’t he too old to be playing Hercules? He’s just so awkward looking now

They haven’t even done the book yet and they’re already getting ready for the movie? What if the book is a total flop? That can’t be good for marketing…

I agree, JT. It seems a bit silly to make a movie out of a graphic novel that hasn’t even come out–especially when so many good graphic novels are already out there. I would much rather they work on established properties then new books that might not even be good.

The film version of Watchmen was almost as good as the book. I wish they would do more of that stuff.

I wish they would write films and not adaptations from books or whatever. Remember when they did that, films were amazing then not just some retelling of the same ole story.

I’m all for comic book/graphic novel adaptations as long as they are done right. Recent history has told us that the more serious mature adaptations are receiving high praise vs the all out special effects action campy style. That being said, I’m not too confident of Dwayne in any real serious characters, he just exudes his own kind of campy in every thing I’ve seen him in. And no, I haven’t read any of the graphic novels listed in the article.

C’mon guys we’ve all seen him in scorpion king and have seen how amazing his prowess was in that genre. As well we’ve seen him in fast five and the guy is in the best shape of his life! No doubt he will “ROCK” as Hercules and I’m sure he will be even bigger then. I’m excited to see it. Can’t wait. As for the movie being contracted before the book comes out I think that it’s brilliant. A little risky but depending on the writer and what he can deliver the story will probably be more script friendly instead of trying to adapt it directly from a non linear based novel. So I’m thrilled to see how all this pans out 🙂 I’m sure we will all be surprised. A project that is set for a novel release and movie could be done very well and I bet the read will be fun as well.

MORE JUDGMENT! NO ONE SPEAKS ON FACT ANYMORE, JUST PERSONAL OPINIONS THAT SHOW IGNORANCE. THE ROCK IS TOO OLD FOR HERCULES?? WHAT IS HE SUPPOSE TO BE 18 – YEAH THAT’S BELIEVABLE!!
WATCHMEN THE MOVIE WAS A HORRIBLE ADAPTATION TO THE NOVEL. I AGREE THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF MOVIES BEING ADAPTED FROM NOVELS AND A LOT OF THEM ARE GARBAGE, BUT LEAVE IT TO THE PEOPLE THAT ARE DEMANDING THIS CRAP AND SPENDING $20 TO WATCH IT IN THE THEATER. JUST LIKE MUSIC OF 80’S & 90’S, YOU’LL NEVER SEE IT AGAIN!

Shuga actually there is this thing called YOU TUBE where you can SEE all the things from the 80’s and 90’s! 🙂

ALSO!!! IF I AM NOT MISTAKEN – FACT: WATCHMEN IS ONE OF THE BEST ADAPTATIONS OF A GRAPHIC NOVEL THUS FAR!!!!!
