Grammy-winner Elton John is being sued by photojournalist/songwriter Guy Hobbs, who claims some of the lyrics to John’s 1985 hit “Nikita” are actually a rip-off of one of his own. Hobbs allegedly wrote a song called “Natasha” in 1982, about his affair with a Russian cruise ship waitress, and shopped it around to various record companies, including Big Pig, which publishes Elton John’s tracks. Three years later, John released “Nikita,” a song about admiring a female German border guard. Hobb says the only reason he’s waited over 25 years to come forward is because he has been living in Africa — but he’s now suing for copyright infringement, although it’s unclear how much of the song is supposedly stolen. A rep for John released a statement maintaining that they “do not know the plaintiff, nor did they make use of any song lyrics he claims to have written when they wrote ‘Nikita,'” adding that the suit is “completely meritless.”
