Elvis starring Austin Butler in the title role and Tom Hanks as his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, tied for first place, taking in a domestic total of $30.5 million.
In a surprise move, Top Gun: Maverick starring Tom Cruise jumped back up two spots from third to tie with Elvis for the top spot, earning another $30.5 million for a domestic total of $521.7 million. After only 31 days in theaters, Top Gun: Maverick also crossed the $1 billion milestone at the global box office this weekend, making it the highest-grossing movie of the year — and Tom Cruise’s first movie to surpass $1 billion.
Last weekend’s box office champ, Jurassic World Dominion, dropped to third place. The star-studded movie took in an additional $26.4 million for a three-week total $302.8 million.
The horror film The Black Phone debuted in fourth place, earning $23.4 million.
Rounding out the top five was Lightyear, starring the voice of Chris Evans in the role of Buzz Lightyear, taking in an extra $17.7 million for a two-week total of $88.8 million. ~Alexandra Heilbron
Update: Final numbers are in, and show that Elvis took the lead with $31.1 million, while Top Gun: Maverick followed closely behind with $29.6 million.

Warner Bros’ DC League of Super-Pets topped the box office this weekend. Trailing closely behind was Jordan Peele’s Nope and Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder.
I found the movie Elvis very informative but I didn’t like Tom Hanks in it. I hope he doesn’t
win any awards for it.
