Elysium tops box office during crowded weekend

Matt Damon and his team in Elysium proved they’re not limited to beating invaders on earth, but a slew of new films as well, with the futuristic thriller coming out on top this weekend at the box office. The special effects-filled film, which has a Tribute rating of 3.8 out of 5 stars, brought in $30.5 million during its debut weekend, fending off tough competition from four other newly released flicks. Comedy fans helped get Jennifer Aniston, Jason Sudeikis and the rest of their faux family to second place, with We’re The Millers bringing in $26.6 million. The raunchy film, which has a Tribute rating of 4.1 stars, had an early start, opening on Wednesday and bringing in an added $11.5 million during the extra two days. Following closely behind, Disney’s Cars spinoff Planes ended the weekend with $22.5 million. The family-friendly animated film has a 4.2 Tribute rating and was originally intended to go direct-to-video. Disney changed their mind and has already commissioned two more Planes feature releases, one slated for next year.

Surprisingly the film with the highest Tribute rating of 4.3 stars, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, opened in fourth place with $14.6 million. The sequel to the 2010 fantasy adventure hit starring Logan Lerman brought in less than half of what its predecessor did. Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief debuted to $31 million three years ago. Rounding out the top five are last week’s newcomers, including the Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg action flick 2 Guns, which Tribute users gave a rating of 3.7 stars, coming in at fifth place with $11.1 million. The kids film The Smurfs 2, which has a 3.8 stars Tribute rating, claimed sixth place with $9.5 million. The Wolverine, The Conjuring, Despicable Me 2 and Grown Ups 2 were also included in the top 10. ~Naomi Leanage
