Epson SureColor P600 printer for beautiful quality photographs and more

epson600When the Epson SureColor P600 first arrived, I wasn’t sure what to expect other than a printer that does photographs of all sizes – and that’s amazing enough in itself. I’d never had the chance to play with a printer like this and as someone who loves photographs, I was really excited about seeing what level of quality this printer would produce.

First, I noticed there was no manual, so I went online to get one to figure out how everything needed to be installed. The manual was easy to find and the installation was really easy as well.

What I couldn’t figure out was that you need to download more drivers if you want to print larger than 8.5 x 12. Once I knew that, it wasn’t a problem.

Although I experimented with various papers, I soon found out that for me, I most enjoyed the photos printed using the Ultra Premium Photo Paper Luster.

The quality of photos this printer puts out is better than you can imagine. The beauty of having a printer like this is that you can redo your print if there’s something you don’t like – such as a small blemish in your original photo. You can put it into Photoshop, remove the blemish and try again. You can adjust the colours, contrast and/or tone and print it out to see which print you like best in order to mount or frame it.

Each time you print, a box pops up showing you how the nine colour cartridges are doing. I was worried that if one got low, the quality of the print would suffer, but the printer keeps going until the cartridge needs to be replaced. This happened a couple of times while I was printing, and the print was no worse the wear for it, you would never know from the end result. I simply got out the new cartridge, switched it and continued.

I offered my coworkers the chance to print out some of their favourite photos as well and they found it just as easy as I did, and were thrilled with the prints.

Our production manager also made use of the printer. He had to print out some proofs and saved time and money by able to do the printouts in-house rather than make a trip to Staples.

I then decided to try making signs for an upcoming event, using a matte paper (Epson Hot Press Bright) and they looked 100 per cent professional.

The printer retails for $960, so it’s not inexpensive and neither is the paper, but if you love taking photographs and want to get prints of them to give to relatives or to hang on your wall, it’s going to bring you hours of fun, not to mention saving you the hassle of going to the photo reproduction store, where you hope they’ll get the colour just right.

In the past, I’ve been unhappy with the quality of the prints I’ve paid for, but with this printer, every photo turned out beautifully. I was ready to make changes, and maybe it was luck, but the colours were beautiful and I never had to play with them.

Not only that, but the ability to make signs and banners (using the Premium Luster Photo Paper that comes on a roll), makes this an invaluable tool to have.
