Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald cast a spell on the weekend box office, making its debut with $62.2 million and scoring the top spot on the chart. The film is a sequel to the 2016 movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, starring Eddie Redmayne and Colin Farrell. The sequel brings new cast member Jude Law as Albus Dumbledore and gives Johnny Depp‘s character Gellert Grindelwald more screen time than in the first one.
Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch dropped to second, earning $38.2 million for a two-week domestic total of $126.5 million. The film follows the Grinch (voice of Benedict Cumberbatch), a cynical grump who likes to bring misery to people’s lives.
Dropping a spot to third was the biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, about the iconic rock band Queen. Starring Rami Malek as lead singer Freddie Mercury, it took in an additional $15.7 million, for a domestic total of $127.9 million.
The hilarious new comedy Instant Family took the fourth spot, earning $14.7 million. The movie stars Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne as a married couple who decide to adopt three kids.
Round out the top five was Widows, which also made its debut this weekend. Starring Viola Davis, the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival this year. It brought in $12.3 million at the box office.
