Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore tops box office

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore debuted at the top of the weekend box office. Starring Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, Jude Law as Dumbledore and newcomer Mads Mikkelsen as Gellert Grindelwald, the third movie in the franchise opened with $43 million, a drop from 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, which took in $62.2 million on opening weekend. In comparison, 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them debuted to $74.4 million.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 starring Jim Carrey and James Marsden dropped to second in its second weekend in theaters, earning an additional $30 million and passing the coveted $100 million mark with a total of $119.6 million.

The Lost City starring Sandra BullockChanning Tatum and Brad Pitt held onto third place in its fourth weekend at the box office, taking in an additional $6.5 million for total earnings of $78.6 million.

Everything Everywhere All at Once, which opened in limited release four weeks ago then semi-wide last weekend, has gained popularity through word of mouth. It earned $6.2 million this weekend for a four-week total of $17.7 million in fourth place.

Rounding out the top five was Father Stu, starring Mark Wahlberg as a former boxer turned priest. It debuted with $5.7 million for a total of $8 million since opening on Wednesday. ~Alexandra Heilbron
