Free Guy wins free-for-all to top weekend box office

With three new films releasing this weekend, it was a free-for-all for the top spot at the box office as Ryan ReynoldsFree Guy, Stephen Lang‘s Don’t Breathe 2, and Jennifer Hudson‘s Respect duked it out to unseat last weekend’s top film The Suicide Squad. Emerging on top was the action comedy Free Guy. Backed by overwhelmingly positive reviews, the video game movie finished the weekend with a $28.4 million gross.

Debuting in second place was the new horror thriller sequel Don’t Breathe 2. In spite of a mixed reception, the sequel to the surprise 2016 hit managed to draw in an estimated $10.6 million at the box office.

Dropping one spot to third was Disney’s Jungle Cruise. The action adventure film starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt earned a weekend gross of $9 million. The film now has a 17-day total of just over $82 million.

Landing at fourth in its debut was the Aretha Franklin musical biopic, Respect. Starring Jennifer Hudson, the film received mostly positive reviews thanks in no small part to Hudson’s powerhouse performance — resulting in a weekend gross of $8.8 million.

After a debut of $26 million to top the box office last weekend, James Gunn‘s comic book reboot The Suicide Squad plummeted a steep 70.4 percent this week. The latest addition to the DCEU finished this past weekend with a mere $7.8 million gross to push its 10-day domestic total to $42.9 million.
