Game of Thrones brutal attack scene causes uproar

By Tribute on May 21, 2015 | 16 Comments

SansaandRamsaySunday night’s episode of Game of Thrones has caused quite a bit of controversy and the social media buzz shows no signs of dying down.

In this season, Sansa Stark was forced to return to her home and in the last episode, married the sociopath Ramsay Bolton in an arranged wedding.

Afterwards, she was brutally raped by him while he made his slave, Reek, watch.

Most of Sansa’s family is now dead and viewers were looking forward to seeing her become a strong young woman in this season, but the rape scene, which happened at the very end of the episode, could have a very negative impact on the extremely popular HBO drama.

Numerous longtime fans of the show have taken to social media and websites, claiming they will no longer watch.

The Mary Sue is a feminist site that claims it won’t cover the series anymore after the brutal rape scene. The website’s Editor-in-Chief, Jill Pantozzi, says the scene was not necessary to Sansa’s character development, nor was it necessary for the story.

One thing is for sure, Game of Thrones will always continue to have its loyal fans, though hopefully the controversial scene will be the last horrifying experience for Sansa, so she can move on with a strong and powerful future. ~Erin Stewart

I had to stop watching that show long ago. I still feel sick when I think of some of the atrocities I saw. An offscreen rape scene is one of their milder scenes, I would think.

I am a huge GOT fan. I found rape scene very alarming. However, saying that I believe that Theo (reek) will finally snap. I want him to attack and possibly kill Ransay off.

Daenerys was raped in season 1 in an arranged marriage to a brutal King, no one seemed to care then.

I love watching Game of Thrones. There was even an exhibit here in downtown Toronto
where they had props for the show and everyone got to sit on the iron throne.
    It was awesome!
As for Sansa getting raped,Ramsay did not need to do that. He knew she was a virgin.
The Red wedding was bad enough.
I thought that her uncle was going to marry her.
I hope she escapes and takes Reeke with her as he has endured enough.
Together they can kill Ramsay and get away.

Rape scene? She wasn’t raped, seeing as how it was their marriage night, they are husband & wife after all!

Rape IS brutal, but the rape SCENE was not. It was 10 seconds of Sansa’s face crying and 2 off-screen thrusts.

We can’t say how it will affect the plot, but I imagine it will have serious repercussions amongst the three people directly involved.

This was not a gratuitous scene. One character is a mad man, and the other two are crying through this scene. It’s not glorified. It’s made to feel as disgusting as it is.

There is no controversy other than what close-minded people are creating in their own psyche…

Anyone who read the books knows that Sansa doesn’t even go back to Winterfell much less get married and raped. Another note** in the books Daenerys is forced to marry Kahl Drogo, however she is not raped. The first time was they had sex was awkward, as she was 13 and they didn’t even speak the same language. He actually did love her. Even in the year 2015, I guess sex and violence against women gets more ratings than the actual written story. A not so hidden undertone of the mindset of our society.

I don’t understand the uproar!! There is incest, rape, killings, etc all through the series. Just because Sansa is a well like character its so HORRIBLE you have to stop watching it. I don’t thing I should continue, but I will, because my hsuband lied to me and said it was Cersie my word was GOOD, how sick is that

As a fan of the book and the show. I can understand this scene. It is the way of Ramsay’s its how he will always will be.( it would look strange if he suddenly turned in to Mr nice because he got married) The scene in the book is a lot worse and its not Sans a,its a girl made to look like her. Yes rape is a terrible thing and I am against it. But this whole story is set in a time where that is the norm and is generally tolerated especially in marriages. Right now I am more upset with the liberties the show is taking with the original story line and how much they have left on the cutting table.

A big fan of the show but I hope so that someone does kill Ramsay’s he is pure evil and sadistic. As for the scene at the end of the show with Ramsay’s and Sansa it was brutal. Being a virgin he could of taken it alittle easy on her.

That is the beauty of GOT and why it works even if it deviates so strongly from the genius written work of George R. Martin in his books (by the way he vets everything on the show so the deviations gets his blessings). It has an uncanny ability to stir all types of emotions in a vast cross section of its viewership. It will shock sadden anger and terrify. And what is it best at? making u get so emotionally invested in an individual (by loving them or hating them, rooting for them or hoping for their demise) that you actually get VERY angry if what you want for them does not happen but instead the opposite does. But just like the lil monster Joffrey got his just deserts trust me Ramsay will get his, but worse (u gotta admit that guy is a great actor the way he makes the audience hate him in complete contrast to how we loved him and rooted for him as the underdog in that fanstastic British series “misfits”. Cersie..well the biggest monster of them all aint going nowhere anytime soon cuz they gotta leave someone for us to hate lol

To Anon Y. mouse….you must be male to think that rape can’t happen between a husband and wife. Non-consensual sexual is rape no matter who you are. Ask my former spouse who has arrest warrants out in three provinces for exactly that! I’m surprised no one else commented on such an ignorant statement. Do all women out there a favor, stay single!

Alright everybody, calm down. This scene was just to show what a brutal asshole Ramsay Bolton is.

I don’t understand the uproar it is only a stupid TV show it is not real and the TV show is not following the novel story. It is not real stop being so sensitive.

    Anon,

You sound like a guy that should have been born back then. Get with the times, women have rights NOW!!! Men like you don’t deserve a “wife” if you think you are the only one in the relationship with the right to say “no”. Do the world a favor and keep your sick thoughts to yourself!!

I agree, the scene was very disturbing but at least the filming didn’t show any of it. Let’s face it, those times were very very harsh on women and children. I think the show simply wants everyone to realize this and of course, ratings also play a part. (Money continues to rule the world!)
