A scene from Nurse.Fighter.BoyPolytechnique, Denis Villeneuve’s harrowing drama about the 1989 Montreal massacre received 11 nominations for the 2010 Genie Awards, including Best Picture.  The highly acclaimed J’ai tué ma mère (I Killed My Mother), which was ignored by the Oscars, also received no Genie nominations, despite enormous success on the film festival circuit. It will however, receive the Claude Jutra Award for outstanding work by a first-time feature filmmaker. “It definitely was considered in all the categories,” said Sara Morton, CEO of The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television. “There is a significant difference between a film that does well on the festival circuit and one which is in a competition against other films. I don’t think you can generalize from festival success to Genie success.” Nurse.Fighter.Boy came in second with 10 nominations. Other nominees for Best Picture include Before Tomorrow, Fifty Dead Men Walking and 3 saisons. ~Alexandra Heilbron
