George Clooney says checkered past limits him

By Alexandra Heilbron on February 23, 2011 | 8 Comments

George Clooney admits that his checkered past is what keeps him from entering politics. The actor is vocal about many political topics, but he says he would never run for election because: “I f**ked too many chicks and did too many drugs, and that’s the truth,” he told Newsweek. “[They] would start from the beginning by saying, ‘I did it all. I drank the bong water. Now let’s talk about issues’. That’s gonna be my campaign slogan, ‘I drank the bong water’.” However, Clooney says he’s going to continue being a vocal activist because he believes his star status makes him someone people pay more attention to than news reports. “Celebrity can help focus news media where they have abdicated their responsibility. We can’t make policy, but we can ‘encourage’ politicians more than ever before,” he explained. “There is more attention on celebrity than ever before – and there is a use for that besides selling products.”

Perhaps a better approach would be to be open and honest about his past. Then run for politics if that is something he is interested in.

eh, I suspect his rep is still cleaner than half the politicians in Washington.

Sorry George you are wrong, you are an actor and that’s all. I am so tired of celebrities that mouth off about their opinions, influencing people who are not smart enough to form an opinion of their own from balanced information sources.

I personally don’t care what George Clooney or any other actor thinks about any topic. Most of them don’t even have a high school education.

Making generalizations such as saying most actors and actresses are uneducated is never a good idea. In fact, George Clooney attended Northern Kentucky University. Edward Norton graduated from Yale, Brad Pitt majored in journalism at the University of Missouri, Julia Stiles graduated from Columbia University, just to name a few.
Someone’s career choice does not necessarily negate them from having worthwhile opinions and the desire to put forth those ideas for the betterment of all.

I personally have been against any celebrity comments in politics and really most any topics except their discussions on movies. BUT, lately I’ve been paying attention to what some actors are trying to bring to light. ‘Regular’ public can turn a blind eye to Darfur (spelling?) and genocides or world hunger issues in specific countries, or abuse to animals, but really, who better to bring to light these issues than a celebrity who doesn’t fumble over their words and people like to go into a fantasy world they believe is real for 1.5-3hrs and they are comfortable in front of the camera? I can’t stand seeing Betty White talk about animal abuse, but it makes me sad and certainly makes me want to do something about it and I like to see someone who I believe it not acting. I can’t stand seeing her discuss it because I respect her and like I said, it makes me want to pay attention.

Politics and world events, well, like I mentioned if it’s not local, most people could care less, so a celebrity who may or may not (hopefully not) be hired and paid to speak out about a situation and make the general public aware and interested and send $ to assist when needed and send food and clothing, then GREAT! Make it so!

As fo running for politics, look at Regan. Extremely popular President of the states and a former actor who helped bring down communism in Russia!!!!!!!!!!! Arnold smoked pot on film and is a foreigner and now runs the most populus state in the whole USA!!!!

So George, when your acting sucks and you still want to get into politics, go for it. Most of the people who are in politics all likely wanted to be something else first. Whether they were fresh out of highschool and joined the military and got a whole different type of education, or a former lawyer, everyone gets the right to change life direction and goals. You never know, the world coule be a better place for it.

Ron–you sound like you’re the one without the education.

Many actors are well-educated and can be great spokespeople.

George Clooney is smart and cares about world politics–he’d be a better politician than most of the politicians we now have.
