Gere charged with obscenity

Two Indian lawyers have filed an obscenity claim against Richard Gere for kissing Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty at a public conference. Public demonstrations, during which Gere’s effigy was burned, took place across India after the incident. Gere, who was appearing at a rally to fight HIV in India, was trying to recreate a scene from his movie Shall We Dance? when he swept the actress into his arms and kissed her several times on the cheek. Hindu traditionalists were outraged, because public displays of affection are forbidden.
