Golden Globe 2020 nominations announced

Marriage StoryThe Golden Globe 2020 nominations were announced this morning. While there were many predictable nods, there were also quite a few surprises.

Streaming services dominated the Golden Globe nominations, with Netflix leading the way in the film categories. Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story, now streaming on Netflix, leads the pack with six nominations, including best screenplay, best drama, best original score, best supporting actress (Laura Dern), best actor (Adam Driver), and best actress (Scarlett Johansson).

Not far behind were two other box office hits and fan favorites: Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood and Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman. They each earned five nominations. Tarantino’s film picked up expected nods for best screenplay, best supporting actor (Brad Pitt), best actor (Leonardo DiCaprio), best director, and best motion picture – musical or comedy.

Scorsese’s Irishman also picked up best director, best drama, and best screenplay. The most shocking snub was Robert De Niro‘s absence from the best actor nominations, while both Al Pacino and Joe Pesci were nominated in the best supporting actor category.

The highly buzzed-about film Parasite earned three nods, including best director, best foreign language film, and best screenplay. Even late entries like Sam Mendes’s 1917 and Rian Johnson’s Knives Out cleaned up with three nods apiece. See below for the entire list of nominations in both film and television.

The 77th Golden Globe Awards will be held on Jan. 5, 2020, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. Ricky Gervais will host the ceremony. ~Marriska Fernandes
