Gone with the Wind’s Ann Rutherford dies

Beloved Gone with the Wind actress Ann Rutherford passed away Monday at her Beverly Hills home. The 94-year-old star had struggled with heart problems and was hospitalized three months ago following a collapse. “Annie was a wonderful person, very philanthropic, and always trying to do something for somebody,” close friend Anne Jeffreys told CNN. “She’s a very funny lady, she said very funny things. She was one of a kind.” Rutherford started out as a child actress and appeared as Mickey Rooney’s steady girlfriend, Polly Benedict, in the popular Andy Hardy movie series of the 1930s and ’40s, but she was best known for her role in the classic blockbuster. “In her last years here, Gone with the Wind really kept her going. She received thousands of fan letters for [the movie],” said Jeffreys. “She donated a script that she had gotten, a tea set that they used in the film, a necklace, things like that. It really was wonderful for the last part of her life, because she was in great demand.” ~Graeme Mollison
